How to Create a Telegram Link (t.me): Complete Guide

Everything you need to know about Telegram t.me links: how to create personal links, channel and group links, the difference between username links and invite links, and how to track clicks.

What Is a t.me Link?

A t.me link is a Telegram deep link that opens the Telegram app directly to a specific chat, channel, group, or user profile. When someone clicks a t.me link on their phone, Telegram opens immediately with the relevant conversation or profile — no searching, no username lookup, and no needing to have the person saved as a contact.

Telegram uses t.me as a shorthand for telegram.me, which is the web version of the same deep link system. Both https://t.me/username and https://telegram.me/username work identically. The t.me format is shorter and the one most commonly used in social media bios, marketing materials, and printed media.

How to Create a Personal Telegram Link

A personal Telegram link is based on your Telegram username. Anyone who clicks it is taken directly to a conversation with you. To create one, you first need to set a username in your Telegram profile settings — personal accounts do not have a t.me link until a username is set.

Once your username is set, your personal link is simply https://t.me/yourusername. There is nothing to configure or generate — the link exists the moment you set the username.

Personal link format:
https://t.me/[your_username]

Example:
https://t.me/kamrandesigns

How to set your Telegram username:
1. Open Telegram app
2. Go to Settings
3. Tap your profile name at the top
4. Tap Username
5. Enter your chosen username (letters, numbers, underscores, min 5 chars)
6. Your link is now https://t.me/[your_username]

Rules:
- 5 to 32 characters
- Letters, numbers, and underscores only
- Not case-sensitive (t.me/John and t.me/john are the same)
- Must be unique across all Telegram accounts

How to Create a Telegram Channel or Group Link

Telegram channels and groups can have public links (based on a username) or private invite links. A public channel with a username gets a permanent link at https://t.me/channelname. Anyone who clicks it can view the channel and join. A private channel or group without a username uses an invite link — a long, randomly generated URL.

Public username links are indexed by search engines and easy to share, making them better for growing an audience. Private invite links give you more control because you can revoke and regenerate them at any time, which is useful for paid communities or private group chats.

Username Links vs Invite Links: Key Differences

Username links and invite links both bring people to your Telegram channel or group, but they work differently and suit different use cases. Understanding the difference helps you choose the right link type for each placement.

Username links are permanent, public, and searchable. They cannot be revoked without changing the username itself, which changes the link. Invite links are private, revocable, and can be set to expire after a certain number of uses or a time period — making them ideal for paid access control.

  • Username links (t.me/channelname): permanent, public, searchable — best for open communities and brand channels
  • Invite links (t.me/+ABC123): revocable, can expire, usage-limited — best for paid groups and private communities
  • Username links cannot be revoked; to invalidate one you must change the username
  • Invite links can be set to expire after 1 hour, 1 day, or 1 week, or after a set number of uses
  • Both link types work on mobile and desktop for all users who have Telegram installed

Where to Place Your Telegram Link

Telegram links work best when placed where the audience already understands the value of your Telegram channel or group. For content creators and communities, the highest-performing placements are the bio on Instagram and Twitter, pinned posts on existing social channels, and in the footer of email newsletters.

For businesses using Telegram for customer support, the link belongs on the contact page, in the email signature, and in the post-purchase order confirmation email. A QR code version of the link works well for printed materials, business cards, and product packaging.

  • Instagram and Twitter bio — highest organic reach for content creators and communities
  • Email newsletter footer — converts existing email subscribers to Telegram followers
  • Website header or contact page — for support-driven businesses using Telegram
  • YouTube video descriptions and pinned comments — effective for video creators
  • QR code on printed materials — for events, business cards, and physical products
  • Cross-promotion in other Telegram channels — the highest-converting channel for Telegram growth

How to Track Clicks on Your Telegram Link

Telegram does not provide click analytics for t.me links. When someone clicks your link and joins your channel, you see the join event but not where the click came from — website, email, Instagram, or direct. To attribute new members to specific channels, wrap your t.me link in a tracked short link.

A tracked short link records each click before forwarding the user to Telegram. You can create a separate short link for each placement — one for Instagram, one for email, one for your website — and compare click counts to see which channel drives the most Telegram growth.

Without tracking:
https://t.me/shortiqio (no data on where clicks come from)

With tracking via ShortIQ:
1. Go to shortiq.io and create a free account
2. Create a short link with your t.me URL as the destination
3. Create a separate short link for each placement channel
4. Share each short link in its respective channel

Example tracked links:
Instagram bio: https://s.shortiq.io/tg-instagram
Email newsletter: https://s.shortiq.io/tg-email
Website footer: https://s.shortiq.io/tg-web

Each link shows separate click counts, timestamps, and device data
so you know exactly which channel is growing your Telegram audience.

FAQ

What is a t.me link?

A t.me link is a Telegram deep link that opens the Telegram app directly to a specific user, channel, or group. The format is https://t.me/username for public accounts and channels. It works on mobile and desktop and does not require the visitor to have the contact saved.

How do I create a Telegram link for my channel?

Set a public username for your channel in the channel settings (Edit > Channel type > Public). Your link is then https://t.me/channelname automatically. For a private channel with no username, use the invite link from Settings > Invite via Link.

What is the difference between a username link and an invite link?

Username links are permanent and public — they cannot be revoked without changing the username. Invite links are private and revocable — you can regenerate them at any time, set them to expire, or limit the number of uses. Use username links for open channels and invite links for paid or private groups.

Can I customize my Telegram username?

Yes, you can change your Telegram username at any time in Settings. Note that changing the username changes the link — anyone using the old link will get an error. For channels and groups, changing the username also breaks the old link, so choose carefully before sharing publicly.

How do I share a Telegram group link without making it public?

Keep the group type as Private (no public username) and share the invite link instead. Go to group settings > Invite via Link > Copy Link. This link lets people join without the group being searchable or public. Revoke the link at any time to stop new joins.

Can I track who clicks my Telegram link?

Telegram does not provide click analytics. To track clicks, wrap your t.me link in a short tracked link using a service like ShortIQ. Each click is recorded with timestamp, device, and referral source before the user is forwarded to Telegram.

Does a Telegram invite link expire?

By default Telegram invite links do not expire, but you can set an expiry when creating them — options include 1 hour, 1 day, 1 week, or a custom date. You can also set a usage limit so the link stops working after a certain number of people have joined. Revoke any invite link manually at any time from the channel or group settings.
